Privacy Policy for MoviEase

TL;DR: We collect only what we need to make MoviEase work. We use a small number of third-party services (listed in section 4) to deliver the app, process payments, show ads on web and Android, and detect crashes. We never sell your personal data, and you can delete your account at any time.
1. Introduction
Welcome to MoviEase ("we," "our," or "us"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile applications (iOS, Android) and web service (collectively, the "Service").
By using MoviEase, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our Service.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide to Us
- Account Information:
- Email address (for account creation and recovery)
- Display name (optional)
- Profile picture (optional, via Google Sign-In or upload)
- Movie Preferences:
- Movies you swipe right (like) or left (dislike)
- Streaming platforms you have access to
- Genre preferences and content warning preferences
- Movies marked as "watched"
- Social Features:
- Friend connections (user IDs only, not personal data)
- Friend codes shared
- Movie matches with friends or partners
- Feedback & Support: Bug reports, feature requests, and feedback you submit.
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Usage Data: App interactions (swipes, searches, tab navigation), session duration, feature usage patterns.
- Device Information: Device type, operating system, app version, language preference, approximate region (derived from your IP address — country/region only, not precise location).
- Performance Data: Crash reports and error logs (via Sentry — see section 4.6). When errors occur, Sentry may capture a brief replay of your session leading up to the error to help us reproduce the problem. Personally identifiable text in the UI is masked.
2.3 Information We Do NOT Collect
- Precise location (GPS coordinates)
- Credit card or payment information (handled by Stripe — see section 4.4)
- Contact lists or phone numbers
- Messages or communications outside the app
- Biometric data
- Health or medical information
3. How We Use Your Information
- Provide and Maintain the Service:
- Show personalized movie recommendations
- Filter movies based on your streaming platforms and region
- Enable friend matching and shared movie discovery
- Improve User Experience:
- Analyze app usage patterns to improve features
- Diagnose and fix bugs through crash reports
- Optimize app performance
- Communication:
- Send notifications about matches with friends or partners (if enabled)
- Respond to support requests
- Send important service updates
- Security and Fraud Prevention: Detect abuse, prevent unauthorized access, protect against security threats.
- Monetization (web and Android only): Display advertisements and process subscription payments. See section 4 for details.
4. Third-Party Services
MoviEase relies on the following third-party services. Each is described with what data they receive and a link to their privacy policy.
4.1 Firebase (Google)
- Purpose: Authentication, database, file storage, hosting, push notifications, crash analytics, server-side logic via Cloud Functions.
- Data shared: All account information, movie preferences, swipe history, friend connections, device tokens for notifications.

4.2 The Movie Database (TMDB)
- Purpose: Provides movie metadata, posters, trailers, cast information.
- Data shared: Search queries and movie IDs only (no account data).

4.3 DoesTheDogDie
- Purpose: Provides content warnings and trigger information.
- Data shared: Movie titles only (no account data).

4.4 Stripe (web and Android only)
- Purpose: Processes premium subscription payments. Not currently active on iOS.
- Data shared: Email and payment details (card number, billing address) entered during checkout. We do not see or store your full card number — only Stripe does.

4.5 Google AdSense / AdMob (web and Android only)
- Purpose: Displays advertisements to non-premium users. Not active on iOS.
- Data shared: Approximate location, device information, and advertising identifiers may be used by Google to serve personalized ads. Users can opt out of ad personalization in their Google account settings.

4.6 Sentry
- Purpose: Collects crash reports and error logs to help us fix bugs.
- Data shared: Error stack traces, browser/device info, and (for a small fraction of error sessions) a recording of UI interactions leading up to the error. Text content shown on screen is automatically masked. No passwords, payment details, or full email addresses are captured.
- Privacy Policy: sentry.io/privacy
4.7 Amazon Associates Program (web and Android only)
- Purpose: "Watch on Prime Video" links in movie details. We earn a small commission when users click through and rent or purchase. Not active on iOS.
- Data shared: Click events (which movie title was clicked) — these are stored by us in Firebase, not shared with Amazon directly. Your browsing on Amazon after clicking is governed by Amazon's privacy policy.

4.8 Apple / Google Sign-In
- Purpose: Optional alternatives to email-password sign-in.
- Data shared: Email and (with your consent) name. Apple Sign-In supports private email relay, in which case Apple gives us a relay address rather than your real email.

We do not sell your personal data to any third party. The services above receive only the data they need to perform the function we use them for. We do not allow them to use it for their own marketing purposes.
5. Data Storage and Security
5.1 Where Your Data is Stored
- Account data and preferences are stored in Firebase / Google Cloud servers.
- Servers are located in the United States and Europe; data may be processed in either region.
- Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS / TLS) and at rest.
5.2 Security Measures
- Encrypted data transmission (TLS 1.2+)
- Secure authentication (Firebase Auth)
- Server-side access controls (Firestore security rules)
- Regular security audits
However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Your Rights and Choices
6.1 Access Your Data
You can view your data within the app at any time, or request a complete copy by emailing privacy@moviease.app. We respond within 30 days.
6.2 Delete Your Account
You can permanently delete your account in two ways:
- In-app: Profile → Settings → Delete Account
- Web: moviease.app/delete-account/ (no app required — works for any user)
Account deletion immediately:
- Cancels any active premium subscription (no further charges)
- Removes your profile, swipes, watched list, friends, matches, taste profile, and all related data from our active systems
- Removes your account from Apple/Google/Email sign-in providers (you can no longer log in)
Limited backup copies may persist for up to 90 days for legal, security, and disaster-recovery purposes, after which they are also permanently deleted.
6.3 Control Your Privacy Settings
- Notifications: Enable/disable in Settings → Notifications
- Friend visibility: Control who can see your taste profile
- Ad personalization: Manage in your Google account (web/Android only — iOS users are not served ads)
- Cookies / analytics: Control via browser settings (web only)
6.4 GDPR Rights (EU/EEA/UK Users)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have the right to:
- Request a copy of your data (data portability)
- Correct inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data (right to be forgotten)
- Object to processing of your data
- Withdraw consent at any time
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

6.5 CCPA Rights (California Users)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect
- Know whether we sell or disclose your information (we do not sell)
- Access your personal information
- Delete your personal information
- Opt out of the sale of personal information (not applicable — we don't sell)
- Non-discrimination for exercising your rights
6.6 Data Retention
We retain your personal data only for as long as necessary to provide the Service. When you delete your account, your personal data is permanently removed from our active systems immediately. Limited backup copies may be retained for up to 90 additional days for legal, security, and disaster recovery purposes, then permanently deleted.
7. Children's Privacy
MoviEase is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately at privacy@moviease.app, and we will promptly delete it.
8. International Data Transfers
If you access MoviEase from outside the United States or the European Economic Area, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in those regions. By using our Service, you consent to this transfer. Where required by law, we use Standard Contractual Clauses or other approved transfer mechanisms.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by:
- Posting the new Privacy Policy at this URL
- Updating the "Last Updated" date at the top
- Sending an in-app notification for significant changes
Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
